It all started with a trip to the library, where I came across a book about creating artwork through children’s portraiture. In the days of stiff, posed studio portraits, creating storytelling portraits was a revolutionary idea, and it instantly captivated me. Portrait art is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I opened my portrait studio in 1998— photographing high school senior portraits before I myself had graduated from high school. I spent several years of the next decade traveling throughout the world with my cameras and teaching workshops for the Institute of Photographic Studies. In 2009 I married an amazing video producer, Nathan. The two of us are now living happily-ever-after in Niles, Michigan with our three children, and we make a dynamic photography team. I’m passionate about artistically capturing that perfect moment in time, the one that tells the whole story and celebrates life: the innocence (and quirks) of children, the unique personality of each high school senior, and the special glow of a couple on their wedding day. These are moments that can never be repeated. Art that can never be re-created years down the road. This is why I photograph.
